THE IDEA           Jessica Woodgate - Researcher

My name is Jess Woodgate and ii am currently in my second year at Winchester University where i study a BA(hons) in Media Production. I have always had a great interest in all different aspects of the media though my passion lies with photographs and editing. Within our company group my role is the researcher. This role requires me to look into similar documentaries and gather any research that may be relevant to our own work. It is also my responsibility to look at different set locations and finalise the ones we will use for shooting our documentary.

Initial Documentary Ideas

Cross Dressing

Today's historical associations with males and power and females and frivolity means that a woman dressed in mens clothes and a man dressed in woman's clothes evoke two very different responses. In our society cross dressing is a very current yet controversial topic. Although it has become much more accepted in recent years there is still much negative press surrounding these people in our community. Our documentary would most likely follow the life of a cross dresser to get an insight into the difficulties that they face on a daily basis. As researcher it is my job to pin point the places in which high proportions of people like to cross dress. One of the main places drawn to my attention was Brighton in East Sussex on the south coast of Great Britain. This town would be ideal for us to talk to individuals and gather information on this subject.

OCD - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is currently one of the top ten debilitating illnesses in terms of decreased quality of life. It is thought to affect at least 1.2% of the UK. As a well known but not understood mental illness we felt that an insight into obsessive compulsive disorder could provide a good basis for a documentary. In today's society nearly everybody has heard of this illness, but few people know the real ways in which people suffer from it. This documentary would follow  different people who have suffered from or overcome obsessive compulsive disorder. Information could be gathered from specialist clinics in Eastleigh and Southampton and we could include interviews with doctors and nurses who come into contact with this illness on a regular basis.

Phobias

This documentary would follow a number of people suffering from irrational and persistent fears of certain situations, things, people or animals. When a fear of something becomes beyond someones control it can often interfere with their lives in dramatic ways. We would follow a selection of people with all different and bazaar phobias and follow them in their daily lives. Similarly to the OCD idea we would also able to gather information from the local hospital and clinics on how to deal with living with an irrational phobia.

2012 Theory

There are currently many theories to suggest that some sort of catastrophe will occur on December 21st 2012 but at current nobody really has an answer. This documentary would explore the different theories relating to the 2012 phenomenon, from the possibility of a war to the world ending and look into how people are preparing for something that noone knows is real.
