Juliet Dowrick - Research

My name is Juliet Dowrick and I am the producer for this project. I have always had an interest in creating media since an early age, in addition to finding it an enjoyable subject. I therefore hope my enthusiasm will be a useful attribute in the role of producer and will help during the creation of our project.  As producer, it is my duty to oversee the whole production process, and put forward my opinions as to whether or not I believe an idea would work. Within the film industry the producer is responsible for every aspect of the film, from the set and location, to budget etc. The producer must also work closely with all crew members, but specifically the director, in order to create a successful piece of work.

My initial ideas for a documentary...

The porn industry

Often considered a taboo subject, sometimes considered art. Pornogaphy has provided much debate in previous years, and would be an ideal subject to explore as a documentary. Where is the line between obscenity and art? Should pornography be viewed so negatively within society? Just some of the questions which could be raised. Although this would be an interesting and controvertial subject to explore it would be very hard to publish due to restrictions and publishing, not only within the university but also he media industry, and therefore would not likely be used as our final subject.

The end of the world in 2012

It started with the Mayan calendar, but now other factors have begun to emerge about the end of an era in 2012, from pole reversals to solar flares. Is it just another Y2K scare? Some people generally believe this signifies the end of an era and have set up survival groups teaching others how to be prepared for a range of disasters. But what do these people really believe? And what exactly do they expect to happen on December 21st 2012? Delving into their personal opinions and exploring where these ideas came from, our documentary would feature interviews from various members of these survival groups in the UK.

Black or white supremacy.

Race has always been a contraversial topic. It could be argued that racism is becoming less and less prevalent within today's society, with political correctness regulating and restricting the promotion of racist implications. However it is common knowledge that racist groups still exist. What is the truth about these groups? Do members generally believe they were created superior to others? Are they there purely for enjoyment, or is there a deeper issue? Our documentary would observe members of these groups as they explain what really goes on and why they do it. The risks in making this documentary would be plentiful, however the rewards may be of equal value.

Cross dressing within society.

Although cross dressing has become accepted within today's society, people still tend to label cross-dressers, and negatively associate them with common stereotypes. Our documentary would expose cross dressers for the people they really are, and not the labels they have been given. It would likely be filmed in the observational mode, however could also be done as a reflexive or expository documentary and would explore what it is really like to be a cross dresser. If this were to become the basis for our final project, we would likely follow a cross dresser and see into their daily life and struggles.
