Below are a few documentaries that I have found most influential to the topics we have researched within the group. I looked a number of different documentaries to get different ideas of styles we could base our own 2012 documentary on.

Transvestite Wives – Sky One Documentary

This observational documentary series examines the different lifestyle choices made by five different couples across the world. The series goes on to look at the different ways in which the couples cope with having a third person in their relationships. We follow each different story and the battles they have overcome in coming to terms with their partner’s lifestyle choice.

Primal Fears – BBC Explorations

This series of five documentaries aired in 2003 look at the lives of five different people suffering from irrational phobias. Throughout the series we get an insight into the science behind the phobia and a first hand look at how irrational phobias are effectively damaging people’s lives. The documentary studies how a fear of something can turn so wrong that it can turn into a phobia. The style of this docementary means that we follow the experiences of different individuals. This is a similar style to what we could use in our 2012 documentary as we follow the beliefs of different groups of people and individuals.

Help me and my child – Channel 4

This documentary series follows the lives of children with mental illnesses ranging from obsessive compulsive disorder to anorexia nervosa and looks at the knock on effects that it has on their families. We follow the children and their families as they receive intensive and emotionally draining treatment at the Maudsley hospital in London. I felt this documentary was particularly relevant to us as a group as we had done an extensive amount of research on OCD and irrational phobias. This documentary provided an interesting example of the way we could present our own documentary on mental health disorders.
