Nicholas Burns, Research - Sound Designer

I have had a keen interest within the media for years. I have made short little video's in the past and have enjoyed every part of the media. For this project I am the sound designer and will be in charge of making sure the sound levels are right so we can whoever is speaking. As well as this, I will also be creating or finding music that can fit the genre of the documentary. As well as this I will also be creating a flash animation for our production company and carrying out on-going research.

The inital Ideas:

Assisted Suicide:

For this documentary I thought we could do a combination of the expository mode as well as the observatory mode into a real-life case study regarding assisted suicide. After pitching this idea to the group we decided against it as we felt that to achieve this would be out of our reach. By this I mean we would be unable to achieve this in the UK.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2010/oct/23/assisted-dying-mary-warnock-cristina-odone - A discussion between two people who have two very different views on assisted suicide. As one believes the law should be changed and assisted suicided should be allowed in the right circumstances the other believes that what is enforced by the law and made legal should stay, because the 'suffering' person could recover.

Cross-Dressing:

Something that is seen as unusual and somewhat unacceptable in society. Following the life as a cross-dresser and their daily routines could be an unique and interesting idea, one that, personally, I have not seen before. This would put us, the filmmakers in an unusual situation but if done correctly could be great fun and informative.

http://www.ladylike.org.uk/ - A website dedicated to woman who have partners that cross dress. Has a list of about 10 questions which have been asked before and an article on each question outlining the answer, or possible answer if there is no clear one. Good starting for this documentary idea.

2012:

It is said that in 2012 something significant will happen world-wide. Some believe that the world is going to end, others believe that the internet and banks will go offline and haywire, and some believe that it could be the start of the end, or a nuclear war. Investigating into the beliefs of people would be interesting and we could ask them what they think will happen, and how they are preparing (if they are) for it.

http://www.the2012theories.com/egyptian.html - A website that explains the many different theories of what could occur in 2012. There are mentions of war and famine, as well as the loss of communications and technology in some places over the world.

OCD:

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an idea that I thought could work and be accessible with clinics and support groups around Eastleigh and Southampton. This could be done as a case study following one person around and getting interviews with their doctors and family thus accepting the observatory mode of documentary film-making.

http://www.ocdaction.org.uk/support-groups/south-east/south-hampshire-eastleigh/ - A support group which can be found in Eastleigh. Could possibly film one session and/or ask members of the support group if they would like or allow us to film their daily routine as part of this documentary.

Phobia's:

Similar to the OCD idea, this could once again be a documentary about a selection of people who suffer from serious or strange phobia's, such as phobophobia which is the fear of phobias or ablutophobia being the fear of washing or bathing. Talking to psychiatrists and doctors could assist this documentary and give us an inside look into the seriousness of phobia's.

http://www.patient.co.uk/health/Phobias.htm - A website which is more of a starting point than anything. Brief outline of what a phobia is, the different types of phobia's (social), treatment and so on. Includes external links which could lead to possible subject within the phobia topic in which we could document.
