Week 1 Introduction to Module

  • Briefly recapped on the previous year's work and introduced to the module.
  • Made aware from the start that we are submitting the finished documentary to UDOC and possibly Winchester Film Festival.
  • Provided with Health and Safety forms, Release forms, University Insurance forms, Ethical Standard forms and Assessment Summary forms online. Assessment Summary form to be signed by everyone in the group.
  • Clear instructions set as to what is expected from group and individuals;
  • 75% of mark is from the web-workbook created by group to show individual tabs containing each individual's research, role, ideas and key contributions.
  • Individual tabs to be sectioned into research categories using hyper-links (example - lectures, photojournalism, documentary etc).
  • Individual Reflection to be between 1000 to 1500 words and include research undertaken, technical aspects (problems, general process), decision making process (pro's and cons), role within the group and if/how it changed (plus role within 15 minutes presentation), how promotional materials improved with more designing and overall management of the project (arranging locations, interviews etc).
  • Web-workbook research is to contain research on specific topics and different types/styles/modes/etc of documentary, analysis of images, documentary and new media (to help with promotional material), professional practice and record of new skills learnt, how they can be applied to the project and effectiveness.
  • Find a new, original and/or exciting documentary that will be a challenge, break stereotypes etc

Week 3 Introduction to Cannon 450d Camera (Group 1)

  • Photo Essay was for Week 6
  • High number speed for SD card the better (get 8gb card)

 Canon 450d

  • AUTO - The camera will revert to its default factory settings to create the photo.
  • P – Automatic with some control (disables flash)
  • TV – Gives control to the shutter speed (higher the shutter speed the more light is needed)
  • AV or F – Gives control to the depth of field (F4 etc)
  • TTL – Measure the amount of light through the lense
  • A-DEP – The depth of field is automatically set
  • ISO - The higher the ISO the more gain
  • 100 - Very sunny conditions with no clouds
  • 200 - Overcast/Cloudy
  • 400/800 - Evening
  • 1600 - Night

Week 4 Group 1 No Lecture

  • Prepare 5 pictures linked by a theme using Cannon 450d and also prepare online site
  • Group outing to Southampton to take pictures with cannon 450d

Week 5 RAW Processing, Meta Data and Industry Image Codes

  • Raw editing uses its own editing program within Photoshop
  • Keep brightness and contrast 10 above/below each other
  • Same principles as Photoshop when editing
  • Always fill out all of the copyright meta data within the camera otherwise companies can use and store your images for free.
  • Start taking pictures and add them to sites like sxc.hu
  • Standard DPI's for TV/Online Media Storm/Magnum Agency
  • Think about work placement

Week 6 Advanced Camera training with Don Hendy

  • Recap on Sony PD170 camera and also history of television new broadcasts/stations and how the set up works
  • Extension given to group in order to complete websites and get them up to date

Week 7 Preparing for group presentation

 10/11/2010

  • Presentation has to be different, interactive and energetic
  • Include supporting promotional material (leaflets, flyers etc) and how they're going to be used (differently/unique)
  • Watched a documentary about the Eels singer Mark E Everett and his Dad, who developed the theory of parrallel universes
  • Discussed the 'breath' technique within documentaries which allow the viewer to reflect on what's been said.
