My first initial thought of this documentary idea was that we could go down any route, just because of the sheer variety and scope that Phobia’s have. After doing a bit of research I found - http://phobialist.com/ which just through looking at the letter 'A' demonstrates how much capacity this idea has and the different directions we could take when decide what to do. |
Agoraphobia
The first idea that the documentary could take is on Agoraphobia which is the fear of going outside. There are many cases on this particular phobia, and has been covered by major television shows to broadcast the issue (link 1). We would follow a particular person on their journey, starting at why they are struggling with phobia and what was the inital case to the issue. We would also confront them will a series of questions, to gather an emotional response from them, and even embrace there phobia as they venture outside. This phobia could be used for interviewing and how there phobia especially affects peoples life.

USP - Unique Selling point
The way in which we have decided to make this documentary different from all of the other ones featuring this subject is to follow an individuals journey into how they are coping with their phobia on an everyday basic. Then going back to the reason why the phobia start in the first place, and then how they intend to target it in the future and confront it. This will include following the participant to their support groups and meetings and there sessions with doctors. The type of documentary will fit into The Performative / The Expository Mode because of the involvement with the subject we will have and engaging in interviews with them.
Support Groups and Clinics
Further research gathered that people are confronting there phobia's through attending support groups and clinics specifically targeting such problems. There were even some possible clinic in the local area, stressing the wide spread issue, that it effecting people in EVERY town and villages. I have contacted the clinic's to secure a possible interview with the owner of the clinic and also a sit in, in one of the sessions to target the phobia's. There are also forums dedicated to supporting Also for possible interviews I found clinics and support groups that for completely dedicated to people suffering from phobia’s.
Disadvantages
After research the subject, I found several documentaries already exploring the idea, and at a lot of feedback we found it was'nt an original idea unless were an a new USP
An example of this topic already being made is the BBC's set of documentaries on Phobia's and Fears - http://anxiety-and-phobias.com/about-phobias/a-set-of-5-bbc-documentarys-on-phobias
sAnother disadvantage is that because this topic does have such a wide variety of ways we take it, it becomes hard to focus on one particular area, and deciding which type or types of phobia's its worth covering either solely or as a group of them together.
